Units!

I went to an autopsy presentation this morning. There was coffee, bagels, and a walk-through of a case that related to our lecture materials.  The resident was presenting the case, which concerned a patient who had, among other things, a “slightly high MCV.”

LECTURER
Tell them what MCV means.

RESIDENT
Oh, sorry.  Mean corpuscular volume, so like the red cells.

LECTURER
(drawing a little and a big circle on the board)
Right, so normal for a red cell is 5-7.  And what about this patient?

RESIDENT
(checks notes)
Ummm … 102.

CLASS
Ha!

Turned out that one was talking in microns and the other was talking in femtoliters.
